Since the inception in 1991, the Vivekananda Institute of Biotechnology, a branch unit of Sri Ramkrishna Ashram, Nimpith is engaged in development, innovation, modulation and adaptation of appropriate modern rural technologies and transferring to the farmers / people through awareness, training, adaptability and demonstration.

Main objective of this Institute was to access, design and develop multi skill modern biotechnology programme for the application in the field of rural development and to build village based human resources as knowledge entrepreneurs.

Effective utilization of resources both human and natural resources of a particular region for employment and creation of wealth. It envisages matching of the natural resources available in that area and the human resources to create new enterprises and employment by usage of Science and Technology S & T intervention.

The marginalized and vulnerable sections and particularly youth deserve a better new technology skills recovery passage to launch the backward regions in to new growth trajectories away from backwardness, in to the future. This great opportunity is now made available within their reach due to emergence of knowledge, economy and its new skill offers, which creating new job opportunities.

DETAILS OF STED TEAM MEMBERS:

1. Project Director: Dr. (Mrs.) Ramalakshmi Datta, M.Sc., Ph. D, 25 years of experience in research work with 14 publications and having national award.

2. Project Manager: Mr. Aloke Kumar Kayal, B.Com., with 20 years working experience.

3. Project Associate: Ms. Dipti Mitra, M.A. with 17 years of service

4. Office Assistant: Md. Abdul Aziz Molla, 8 years working experience at VIB.

5. Dr. Ajit Kumar podder, M.Sc. Ph. D, 36 years of experience in research and teaching with 64 Journal publications also awarded from BINA.

ROLE OF STED:

STED project play a great role for improvement of livelihood of South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. Having the training of EDP and SDP after EAP programme under STED, the entrepreneurs are earning a good amount of money per month, which help them to maintain their families and most of them are thinking to expand their entrepreneurial activities in surrounding areas. STED programme also help both the Institute as well as entrepreneurs, particularly science and technology intervention which have strengthened the entrepreneurs to stand on their own and unlocks the scope to uphold VIB efforts of low cost applicable technology.

  1. Explain S&T intervention involved & quantify the impact/ value addition for the micro-enterprise:

Value addition with vermicompost are some beneficial micro organism i.e. Azotobactor non-symbiotic nitrogen fixing micro organism, phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) for mineralization of fixed phosphate in the soil i.e. unavailable form to available form of P. Use Tricoderma Viridi(TV) to check the other pathogenic fungus for plant. TV also increase their numbers due to the presence of vermicompost which not only improve the plant health and productivity but also maintain the soil health for future plants.

  1. Explain S&T intervention involved & quantify the impact/ value addition for the micro-enterprise:

Mrs. Mamataj Mondal wants to maintain the Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), particularly ecological farming in her nursery. So, she first of all analysis the soil of nursery bed and as per recommendation from soil analysis, she has been applying Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) particularly bio fertilizer, vermi compost and organic matter as much as possible. On the other hand she has also follow the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and try to reduce the use of harmful chemical pesticide. Now she is using bio and botanical pesticides. Both these technologies, she has adopted after having training from VIB under STED programme. She has producing off-season tomato, cabbage, chili, cherry tomato in her nursery all through the year and supply it to the market directly.
