Present Scenario of Water Management in Sundarbans:
Approximately 62% land of Sundarbans area is low lying and suffers from elevated salinity during dry season due to ingression of saline water and increasingly acid sulphate build-up.
This result in declining soil fertility and so farmers are increasing the artificial fertilizers and pesticides which further ground water pollution affecting the whole ecosystem, the productivity of aqua-systems is adversely affected.
Rain water is the main source for the Annual rainfall is 1100-1300 mm. and 85% of it occurs only in the monsoon in the mid June to October. Artesian water supply are found at depth of 200-400m deep making irrigation unaffordable (only 12% is under irrigation).
Rain water harvesting in ponds provides important water for personal use, fish rearing and irrigation but due to poor maintenance, siltation, eutrophication etc, the problem remains a major concern.
Agriculture and fisheries are the main source of livelihood and both are affected directly by the ingression of saline water. Because of the use of poor quality pond water in day to day domestic purpose the sanitation aspect is also a major problem like any other rural remote area.
And the health condition of the community as a whole is also getting affected. In the target area no support structure is available to get the analysis of water sample for different purpose.
As mentioned before during monsoon the said problems become less but in other parts of the year the situation worsens. The quality of water used is a perpetual problem. Thus the problems as envisaged are:
- Quality of available water
- A functional facility to support the villagers to detect the quality of ground and surface water
- The ground water is contaminated through arsenic, iron, salinity, and hardness as well as surface by ingression of sea water.
- This contaminated water is unhealthy not only for human but also deteriorate the arable land and consequently decreasing the crops yield, harmful for domestic animal including fresh as well as brackish fish culture
- Till date no system is made to get the samples analyzed on regular basis so that a database is developed which finally will enable to devise a system to manage the huge problem.
- Samples will be collected and analyzed in each season (3) for 3 years with the help of trained local manpower
- Samples will be collected from all the water resources including the rivers of the area and soil
- Database will be prepared and analyzed to understand the problems
- Site specific management plan will be designed and tested to understand the efficacy of the same
- The selected manpower will be trained and the sustainable support structure will be established.
